Senior Technical Trainer / Curriculum Developer

POSITION DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Technical Trainer / Curriculum Developer with a great track record of delivering and creating successful technical software courses. The ideal candidate has a talent for developing clear, precise, and elegant training curriculum for the various audiences that use and develop enterprise software products and can also successfully present the material to a live audience.

The applicant should possess a strong technical background, understand a large-scale distributed software system, be dynamic, motivated, flexible, independent, well organized, and possess a bulletproof positive attitude when working under pressure to meet project deadlines. We are looking for someone who communicates well in a team environment and can work with minimal direct supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Present technical training courses to live student audiences at the AVOLENT Education Center in San Francisco and occasionally at customer sites. Some travel is required.
  • Deliver high-quality training curriculum assignments within specified time deadlines, with minimum guidance and supervision. Investigate and recommend new and creative methods for class design and delivery.
  • Set up and maintain training room environment and workstations.
  • Plan, research, develop, and maintain highly technical training curriculum for various end-users, software developers, consultants, and system administrators, on use, installation, configuration, development, and customization of a Web-based enterprise software product.
  • Help design new training courses by gathering information from product documentation, technical specifications, hands-on use of the product, and from interviews with subject matter experts such as product engineers and consultants, product managers, Technical Support, Marketing, and QA.
  • Assist management with the scheduling process by estimating task duration with reasonable accuracy. Help define the detailed scope of assignments from basic guidelines. Assist with issue and risk assessment.
  • Initiate and provide follow-up for technical reviews to ensure curriculum quality and consistency. Gauge customer satisfaction and success of training with standard metrics such as evaluation surveys and skills tests.
  • Provide constructive feedback to Engineering, QA, and Product Management to positively influence product development and product direction.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

  • Excellent presentation and teaching skills with ability to create successful hands-on learning experiences for students in technical courses using lab-centric curriculum.
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills. Must communicate effectively and professionally and cultivate strong working relationships with subject matter experts, team members, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to perform all phases of training curriculum development, including research, planning, writing, organizing, gathering review comments, desktop publishing, and document conversion into final media formats.
  • Ability to quickly learn complex subject matter with the skill to present the material to a live audience. Solid information design skills with a keen sense for effectively prioritizing and targeting material for each audience. Ability to streamline and filter ambiguous language into its basic elements to impart clarity and preciseness and make complicated concepts seem simple.
  • Excellent understanding of application user and developer audiences, their needs, and curriculum design issues.
  • Proficient in technical writing and curriculum development tools including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and other interactive learning software and media. FrameMaker skills desirable.
  • Solid understanding of Web-based applications, related databases, object-oriented programming methodology, and best practices for software development.

Education or Formal Training:

  • BS and/or MS in Computer Science or related fields or BA in English, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric, Journalism, or related field from an accredited university with related computer technical experience.
  • Certificate in Education, technical training, technical writing, or advanced computer science coursework is desirable.

Experience:

  • At least six years of experience delivering courses to students and writing and developing technical information (online and hardcopy) and designing software training classes for software developers and application end-users. Demonstrated ability to address users of various levels of experience.
  • Two to three years of experience as a senior or lead training curriculum developer with some experience coordinating the work of others.
  • History of continued employment in the software technical training field with portfolio of projects for various audiences.

REPORTING
This position reports to the Senior Manager, Technical Publications & Education.
